Chennai, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : M. Veer Pandian, the Tamil Nadu state secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI), firmly rejected Minister Aadhav Arjun’s demand for clarification regarding alleged irregularities in the highways and public works departments during the previous DMK government.
Pandian emphasized that the CPI cannot be held accountable for the actions of an administration they supported from the outside. He cautioned Arjun against making accusations without understanding the CPI’s long history of struggle and their contributions to public life.
He advised the minister to read up on the history of the communist movement before making such claims. According to Pandian, it is essential for Arjun to not only understand this history but also to discuss it with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
Arjun raised the issue during a gathering in Madurantakam, questioning whether the communist parties could honestly assert that no wrongdoing occurred during the previous DMK administration.
In response, Pandian dismissed the challenge, stating that the communists had supported the former DMK government to uphold democracy. He clarified that this support does not make the CPI responsible for every decision or mistake made by the previous administration.
He remarked, “Should we be held accountable for others’ mistakes five years later? Our support was based on an agreement with the previous government and was given from outside. We cannot be blamed for its errors.”
Pandian also made it clear that the CPI has no intention of destabilizing the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam government led by Vijay. He asserted that any political disagreements with the ruling party would be addressed democratically and should not be misconstrued as attempts to topple the government.
Defending the integrity of the communist movement, he pointed out that throughout its long political history in Tamil Nadu, no CPI member has ever been convicted of corruption by any court. He emphasized that CPI members neither accepted bribes nor remained silent in the face of corruption or bribery by others.
Pandian urged Arjun to exercise restraint before accusing the leftist parties and to verify historical facts. He concluded that political support given to any government should not be misrepresented as unconditional approval of all its actions.
