Nagpur, June 6: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has made a significant drug bust in Nagpur, apprehending two individuals and seizing over 522 kilograms of marijuana valued at approximately ₹2.61 crore. This operation was conducted by the DRI’s Nagpur Regional Unit in collaboration with the Mumbai Zonal Unit on Saturday, targeting an inter-state drug trafficking syndicate.
Based on specific intelligence, DRI officials intercepted a long-platform truck traveling from the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border along National Highway 53 towards Maharashtra. The vehicle was halted near the Mathani Toll Plaza in the Nagpur district.
Upon conducting a thorough search of the truck, officials discovered the marijuana cleverly concealed in a specially designed secret compartment. It is believed that this narcotic substance was being transported as part of an inter-state drug trafficking network operating in the Odisha-Central India corridor, supplying drugs to Maharashtra.
Following the investigation, two individuals linked to the trafficking network were arrested. During questioning, the suspects reportedly admitted their involvement in the illegal transportation of drugs. They have been charged under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985, and further investigations are underway to identify other members of the syndicate.
This recent seizure is part of a series of significant anti-drug operations conducted by the DRI in recent months. Previously, on May 31, the DRI seized 104.9 kilograms of marijuana in Bihar, leading to the arrest of two suspects.
In another notable operation on April 13, the DRI’s Nagpur Regional Unit dismantled an inter-state drug trafficking racket, seizing approximately 853 grams of cocaine valued at around ₹4.26 crore. This operation was also based on specific intelligence, where DRI officials intercepted a female passenger on the Hazrat Nizamuddin-KSR Bengaluru Rajdhani Express at Nagpur railway station.
Suspicious of her luggage, officials requested her to disembark for further inspection. Upon searching her belongings at Ajni railway station, they discovered two unusually heavy shampoo bottles. After extracting the liquid, they found 50 sealed capsules containing a yellow substance, which was later confirmed to be cocaine. The drugs were seized, and an investigation was initiated.
