Ranchi, June 25: Significant developments emerged during a hearing in the Jharkhand High Court regarding the case of 18-year-old Pushpa Kumari, who went missing from Bokaro district nearly 11 months ago. The court was informed that the DNA samples obtained from skeletal remains matched Pushpa’s DNA profile, according to a report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Kolkata.
However, the complete skeletal DNA has not yet fully matched that of her parents. Pushpa Kumari disappeared on July 31, 2025, from the Pindrajora police station area. After a prolonged search yielded no results, her mother, Rekha Devi, filed a habeas corpus petition in the Jharkhand High Court seeking her daughter’s recovery.
During the investigation, police arrested a young man named Dinesh Kumar Mahto based on technical evidence and questioning. According to police, the accused confessed to murdering the young woman, leading to the discovery of skeletal remains at a specified location.
Pushpa’s family has consistently questioned the claim that the recovered skeleton belongs to her. In light of this dispute, the High Court directed that the skeleton and DNA samples from Pushpa’s family be sent to the CFSL lab in Kolkata. During Thursday’s hearing, the court received updates on the investigation report, with members of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) present in court.
The High Court has requested information regarding ongoing proceedings in the lower court related to this case. Additionally, the court has inquired about any actions taken against police officials allegedly negligent in the investigation. The court instructed the police to complete necessary legal procedures concerning the recovered skeleton.
Meanwhile, Pushpa’s family remains unconvinced that the recovered skeleton is that of their daughter. The High Court emphasized that the police should proceed in accordance with available scientific evidence and legal provisions. The hearing on this case will continue.
