DMK and Congress Face Stalemate Over Seat Sharing Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections

Chennai, March 3: The deadline for seat sharing negotiations between the DMK and Congress for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is set to expire on Tuesday. However, no consensus has been reached during discussions, raising concerns about the future of the DMK-Congress alliance.

According to party sources, DMK leadership has urged Congress to clarify its final stance within a specified timeframe. The DMK aims to finalize seat allocations and begin election campaigning. The ongoing uncertainty stems from the inability to reach an agreement within the DMK’s given timeline, leaving questions about whether the two allied parties can resolve their differences.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, Congress was allocated 25 seats under the DMK-led alliance. Reports indicate that the DMK intends to maintain this formula for the upcoming elections, offering Congress the same number of 25 Assembly seats once again. Additionally, the ruling party has agreed to provide Congress with one Rajya Sabha seat as part of the alliance agreement.

This time, Congress is demanding at least 35 Assembly seats. The party argues that its organizational presence and electoral performance justify a larger share. This demand for more seats has led to a stalemate in negotiations over the past few days.

DMK sources suggest that increasing Congress’s quota will not be easy, especially with new parties joining the alliance. Several coalition partners are also seeking representation, prompting the ruling party to strive for a strategic balance.

There are indications that if Congress’s demand for 35 seats is not met, the party may reconsider its position within the alliance. However, no official announcement has been made regarding this matter.

As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on the leadership of both parties ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. Will they reach a compromise, or will the stalemate reshape the political landscape of the state?
