India and Bangladesh Discuss Strengthening Defense Relations

Washington, April 9: The High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, met with Brigadier General (Retired) Dr. A.K.M. Shamsul Islam, the Defense Advisor to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, in Dhaka. Both leaders emphasized the importance of continuously improving India-Bangladesh relations.

During the meeting, the officials reviewed security and defense cooperation between India and Bangladesh. They discussed aspects such as bilateral consultation mechanisms, training exchanges, capacity-building initiatives, and collaboration between defense institutions of both countries. They also explored measures to further strengthen defense ties.

The Indian High Commission highlighted on the social media platform X that both sides reiterated the significance of continuously enhancing India-Bangladesh relations. They reaffirmed the unbreakable bonds forged through shared sacrifices during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

Both parties discussed ways to further strengthen defense cooperation as a crucial part of their extensive bilateral relationship. They also deliberated on shared security challenges and agreed to work together to promote peace, security, and stability in the region.

The Indian High Commissioner reiterated India’s commitment to advancing multifaceted cooperation with the Bangladesh government based on mutual interests and reciprocal benefits.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met with his Bangladeshi counterpart, Khalidur Rahman, and his delegation in New Delhi on Wednesday. The two leaders discussed strengthening various aspects of bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and global issues.

Jaishankar expressed on social media that he was pleased to host Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalidur Rahman and his delegation, discussing ways to empower their bilateral relations and share insights on regional and global developments. They agreed to maintain mutual contact.

Khalidur Rahman arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday for a “goodwill visit.” Dhaka emphasized that this visit is expected to lay an “important foundation” for making future cooperation between the two countries more productive and sustainable.

This visit is significant as it marks the first trip to India by a Bangladeshi minister since the BNP government took office in February. It signals a potential shift in India-Bangladesh relations.

Tensions had risen between the two countries during the 18-month tenure of Muhammad Yunus’s interim government, characterized by increasing violent attacks against Hindu minorities and anti-India rhetoric.

Earlier on Monday, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma met with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, where both sides discussed ways to enhance mutual engagement and cooperation in key areas. During the meeting, Verma expressed India’s desire to deepen relations through a “positive, constructive, and forward-looking approach” based on shared interests and mutual benefits.
