Ujjain, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : The Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain held its Bhasma Aarti on the twelfth day of the waning moon in the month of Bhadrapada, drawing a significant crowd of devotees eager to witness the sacred ceremony.
In the early hours of Tuesday, following the command of Lord Veerabhadra, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As the devotees caught their first glimpse of Baba Mahakal after the divine adornment and Bhasma Aarti, the temple echoed with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and recitations of mantras.
With the opening of the temple gates, the ceremonial bathing of Lord Mahakal commenced. The deity was bathed with Panchamrit, a sacred mixture made of water, milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices. Following the initial ringing of the bell, the offering of Haridra Om was made, and Baba donned a crown. The Bhasma Aarti was performed amidst the sounds of cymbals, drums, and conch shells, with Baba Mahakal adorned in a tripundra and a garland of rudraksha beads.
The chief priest conducted the grand Aarti, allowing numerous devotees to partake in the divine experience. Many had lined up since the previous night to have a glimpse of their beloved deity. Traditionally, men are required to wear dhoti and women sarees during this sacred ritual.
According to tradition, the Bhasma Aarti is offered to Baba Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhara. It is believed that after the offering of Bhasma, Baba Mahakal manifests from the formless to the tangible, granting visions to his devotees. The event drew a large number of worshippers to the holy city of Ujjain, eager to be part of this spiritual celebration.
