New Delhi, April 1: Under the guidance of Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, the Delhi government’s Food Safety Department has intensified monitoring and enforcement actions to ensure the availability of safe food for citizens in the capital.
The Health Minister emphasized that providing safe food to every citizen of Delhi is our top priority. He has specifically instructed the Food Safety Department to maintain strict surveillance during festivals and take immediate action against any violations. The positive results achieved so far are a testament to our ongoing efforts. Under the capable leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, we will continue to strengthen our enforcement and monitoring mechanisms to uphold the highest standards of food safety.
During ongoing inspections and special monitoring campaigns across various districts in Delhi, a total of 98 food samples were collected from different food business operators. These samples included commonly used food items such as sweets, dairy products, spices, and other essential food materials.
So far, the food safety laboratory has released reports for 54 samples, all of which met the prescribed food safety standards. No samples have been found unsafe or failing to meet the required criteria. The testing of the remaining samples is ongoing, and we await detailed reports.
During Navratri, the department conducted extensive inspections, focusing particularly on food items consumed during fasting, such as buckwheat flour, water chestnut flour, sago, fruits, and dairy products. Special campaigns were carried out in markets, wholesale areas, retail shops, slum areas, unauthorized colonies, and other crowded locations to ensure the availability of safe and standard-compliant food during the festivals.
Under the surveillance and regulatory framework of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, a total of 165 food samples were collected during this period, including 138 surveillance samples and 27 enforcement samples. Thanks to strict adherence to regulations, thorough inspections, and direct monitoring under the Health Minister’s guidance, no unwanted incidents related to food safety were reported during Navratri.
A significant number of samples were collected, encompassing both surveillance and enforcement types. The laboratory tests of legal samples showed that most met the required standards. In cases of non-compliance, necessary actions have been initiated according to strict legal provisions.
The Food Safety Department remains committed to its rigorous monitoring and zero-tolerance policy against food adulteration. Regular inspections, continuous monitoring, and prompt enforcement actions are ongoing across all districts of the capital to ensure public health safety and maintain consumer trust.
