Delhi Capitals Playoff Dreams Dashed: Five Key Reasons for Their Disappointment

New Delhi, May 24: Despite having one match left in IPL 2026, the Delhi Capitals (DC) have seen their playoff aspirations come to an end. Under the captaincy of Axar Patel, DC failed to secure a spot in the top four. Here are five reasons that contributed to the downfall of Delhi Capitals’ playoff hopes.

Kuldeep Yadav’s Underperformance: Kuldeep Yadav was anticipated to be DC’s ace in IPL 2026. However, he struggled throughout the season, taking only 7 wickets in 11 matches with an economy rate of 10.66. This means he not only failed to take wickets in the middle overs but also could not contain runs effectively.

Tristan Stubbs’ Disappointing Season: The Delhi Capitals had high hopes for Tristan Stubbs this season. Known for his ability to change the course of a match, he faced challenges in scoring runs. The South African batsman managed a strike rate of just 127.90 over 13 matches. Although he scored 275 runs, he often returned to the pavilion at crucial moments, leaving the team in a tough spot.

Captain Axar’s Lackluster Performance: Axar Patel’s poor form also played a significant role in DC’s disappointing performance in IPL 2026. He struggled with both bat and ball, scoring only 134 runs at a strike rate of 125 over 13 matches and taking just 10 wickets.

Weak Middle Order: The middle order of Delhi Capitals appeared fragile this season. While the top order performed well in some matches, the middle order failed to stabilize the innings when the top order faltered. Only David Miller showed some consistency in his performance.

Ineffective Pace Attack: DC’s pace attack was another area of concern this season. Although Lungi Ngidi delivered impressive spells in a few matches, he lacked support from the other end. Mitchell Starc joined the team late, which impacted the team’s performance. Mukesh Kumar did not meet expectations, and the young bowlers failed to make a significant impact.

In summary, these factors combined to thwart Delhi Capitals’ ambitions for a playoff spot in IPL 2026.
