New Delhi, May 28: D. Gukesh is rapidly emerging as a champion in the world of chess. He made his first move at the age of just seven. By the time he turned 18, he had earned the title of World Champion. Standing at 5 feet 7 inches, Gukesh has a unique ability to captivate his opponents with his strategic moves.
Born on May 29, 2006, in Chennai, Gukesh comes from a family with no prior connection to chess. His father, Dr. Rajinikanth, is an ENT surgeon, and his mother is a microbiologist. Despite this, Gukesh showed a keen interest in chess from a young age. He played his first game at seven and preferred chess over studies. He practiced for one to two hours at least three days a week.
His talent was quickly recognized by his coach and those around him. He began participating in local tournaments at a very young age. At just nine, he competed in the Under-9 category of the Asian School Chess Championship and successfully claimed the title.
Gukesh’s hard work and dedication continued. Three years later, at the age of 12, he participated in the World Youth Championship, where he also emerged victorious, winning five gold medals. At 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days, he became the third youngest Grandmaster in chess history.
The year 2024 proved to be historic for D. Gukesh. At just 18, he became the World Chess Champion, fulfilling a dream he had nurtured since childhood. He broke the record previously held by the legendary Garry Kasparov, becoming the youngest World Champion ever. Gukesh is only the second Indian player to achieve this feat, following Viswanathan Anand. In recognition of his accomplishment, the Government of India awarded him the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2025.
