Colombo, August 27: After the second Test against Sri Lanka ended in a draw on Thursday, Indian captain Shubman Gill stated that his team gave their all on the field and has no regrets about their strategic decisions.
On the final day at the SSC Ground, India needed to take four quick wickets to chase a small target. However, Sonal Dinuja’s unbeaten 133 runs dashed India’s hopes, with only nine Sri Lankan wickets falling. Despite the draw, India secured the series 1-0.
Post-match, Gill remarked, “To be honest, there was nothing more we could have done. We fielded for three days in so many overs; we tried our best, but they played exceptionally well. Their batsmen showed great skill and had a bit of luck on their side.”
After declaring their first innings at 503/9, India bowled out the hosts for just 290 runs in their first innings, forcing Sri Lanka to follow on.
Regarding the decision to enforce the follow-on, Gill explained that decisions during the match are made based on the situation and should not be questioned later. He added, “You can think about the follow-on later, but such discussions can happen afterward. You make the best decision in the moment, and sometimes things don’t go your way. But it was a fantastic match. I believe Test cricket won today.”
Despite not achieving a clean sweep in the series, Gill highlighted several positives for his team, saying, “I think there are many positives for us. We also learned from the opposition. They were under pressure, and the way they made a comeback was impressive. There are many good things for us. Devdutt Padikkal performed brilliantly. Manav Suthar played very well, and KL Rahul also had an excellent outing. Our fast bowlers gave their all. It’s an exciting time for us.”
Left-arm spinner Suthar emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the series with 16 wickets. Captain Gill praised Suthar, saying, “Everything about him impressed me. His consistency, how he releases the ball, and how it comes off his wrist and fingers. Watching him bowl is a pleasure. He will be a crucial bowler for us in the future.”
On qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, Gill stated, “It is essential for us to maintain consistency in our preparation, performance, and work ethic both on and off the field. We are heading to New Zealand, which will be a good series for us, followed by a solid home season. We will keep our confidence up and hope to secure a place in the WTC final.”
