New Delhi, June 7: Authorities reported on Sunday that a couple from West Bengal has been arrested in connection with the murder of an assistant professor at Delhi University. This arrest occurred three days after the incident.
Delhi police stated that the motive behind the murder was a property dispute, and the accused couple traveled from Bengal to Delhi to commit the crime.
Debosmita Paul, an assistant professor at Shivaji College, was found dead on June 4 in a flat located in Satyam Apartments, Vasundhara Enclave, East Delhi. Investigations revealed that the murder took place a day earlier, on June 3.
Police initially spotted a man and a woman, both wearing masks to conceal their identities, carrying bags as they entered the professor’s residence. It is believed that the murder occurred on the same day, and they spent nearly half an hour inside before leaving.
According to sources involved in the investigation, the couple arrived at the residential complex at 3:20 PM on June 3 in a private cab. The cab driver remained outside while the man and woman entered the apartment building with their bags.
CCTV footage reportedly shows the couple using the stairs instead of the elevator to reach the flat. Investigators suspect that they spent approximately half an hour inside the premises before exiting. Sources also claimed that they were dressed differently when leaving the building.
An initial examination of the crime scene showed no signs of forced entry, leading investigators to believe that the victim may have known the individuals who entered her home. This possibility has strengthened the theory of a “friendly entry,” suggesting that the victim willingly allowed her visitors inside.
Paul lived alone in her sister’s apartment. After experiencing marital issues, she had separated from her husband in 2022, who currently resides in Bengaluru.
The case came to light when her sister, Devrati Paul, grew concerned after failing to receive a response despite repeated phone calls. Upon arriving at the apartment, she found the door locked from the outside. When she managed to enter, she discovered Debosmita’s body in a pool of blood and immediately notified the police.
Investigators noted that the victim had sustained severe injuries to her head from a heavy object, and there were also signs of injury on her wrist.
