Saharanpur, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : The demolition of a century-old mosque in the Saharanpur Collectorate complex has ignited significant political controversy. Following the mosque’s destruction, authorities discovered a deep well at the site, intensifying the backlash against the government.
Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput criticized the action, asserting that no building over 100 years old can be deemed illegal. He emphasized that the affected parties were not given the chance to appeal to the Supreme Court, stating, “Our constitution guarantees them rights, yet they were not allowed to approach the High Court either.”
Rajput further alleged that the mosque was demolished under the cover of darkness, suggesting that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is attempting to polarize communities and incite communal tensions.
In support of these claims, Samajwadi Party national spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan backed AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi’s remarks, labeling the BJP government as anti-Muslim. He noted, “The BJP continuously targets the religious rights of minorities and their places of worship. A decision from the judiciary came from a lower court, but there was no opportunity to appeal to a higher court. What was the urgency? The actions in Saharanpur mark a stain on society, as demolishing a religious site without due process suggests an anti-mosque stance from the BJP.”
Conversely, the ruling coalition partner Janata Dal (United) (JD-U) supported the administration’s actions. JD-U national general secretary Shyam Rajak stated in Patna, “If mosques, temples, or churches are constructed in violation of regulations, the government must act according to the constitution and law. Law takes precedence over religious sentiment when rules are broken.”
The situation remains tense as various political factions weigh in on the implications of this controversial demolition.
