Chennai, October 1 (Daily Kiran) : The Madras High Court has dismissed a case against former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) and other AIADMK leaders, who were accused of protesting without permission. This case dates back to October 2022.
On October 19, 2022, the AIADMK sought permission to hold a hunger strike at Valluvar Kottam in Chennai, led by EPS. The demonstration was intended to protest the expulsion of AIADMK legislators from the Tamil Nadu Assembly. However, the police denied the request for permission.
Following the denial, EPS, along with former ministers and party legislators, went ahead with the protest at Valluvar Kottam without authorization. The Nungambakkam police subsequently filed a case against them, citing disruptions to traffic caused by the demonstration.
In response, EPS and other AIADMK officials approached the Madras High Court to seek the dismissal of the case. They argued that the charges were politically motivated and emphasized that no untoward incidents occurred during the protest.
The petitioners contended that such criminal actions should not be initiated against individuals participating in a peaceful democratic protest. After hearing the arguments, Justice V. Lakshminarayanan of the Madras High Court ordered the dismissal of the case against EPS and the others.
