Congress Leader Calls for Suspension of West Bengal Assembly Elections

New Delhi, March 2: As political parties gear up for the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has urged the Election Commission to postpone the elections until pending legal matters are resolved. He has also sent a formal letter to the commission regarding this request.

In an interview, Chowdhury emphasized that participating in elections is a legal right for all eligible voters. However, he pointed out that currently, around 6 million names are missing from the voter list in West Bengal. This situation has led to the initiation of a process termed ‘under adjudications,’ indicating that these matters are still pending resolution. There is no timeline provided for when these issues will be addressed.

Chowdhury stated, “I believe that elections should not be held as long as even one valid voter is excluded from the voter list. Otherwise, the constitutional rights of the common people will be compromised.” He insisted that elections should not take place until the final voter list is announced and all pending issues are resolved.

Addressing the concerns raised by Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding illegal immigration, Chowdhury remarked that if anyone discusses the issue of ‘infiltrators’ without addressing it in West Bengal, how can the elections be fair? He noted that the topic of infiltrators has been raised for decades, yet they seem to disappear after elections.

On the demand to boycott the Bengal elections, Chowdhury reiterated his call for the elections to be halted. He highlighted that the way the Election Commission is currently operating is infringing upon the rights of ordinary citizens.
