Bhopal, March 31: The Congress party has raised concerns over the proposed demolition of the labor colony slum located in the Govindpura area of Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. A delegation from the party submitted a memorandum to the district collector, urging an immediate halt to the demolition plan.
The delegation emphasized that this action would displace hundreds of impoverished families. They highlighted that many families have been residing in the labor colony since 1982. On March 29, municipal officials, accompanied by police, arrived with bulldozers to initiate the demolition without any prior notice or legal procedure.
Local residents protested, leading to a postponement of the demolition. However, the administration issued a warning for families to vacate their homes within two days. The residents possess valid leases and regularly pay taxes and utility bills, making their forced eviction unjust and inhumane. The delegation insisted that the proposed demolition of the labor colony should be stopped immediately.
They called for the exploration of alternative routes for road construction and development to ensure the safety of the slum. They also demanded a halt to any actions taken without proper legal procedures and prior notice. Furthermore, they requested that officials refrain from threatening or harassing the residents.
The delegation expressed confidence that the administration would approach this serious issue with sensitivity and make a fair decision. The Congress party clarified that this matter transcends mere housing; it is about the lives, livelihoods, and dignity of hundreds of families. If the administration fails to make a positive decision soon, the Congress party will be compelled to launch a public movement in the interest of the people.
