Jalandhar, April 6: Jalandhar Cant MLA Parghat Singh recently shared a video on the social media platform ‘X’ regarding the upcoming Senate elections at Punjab University.
In his appeal, Singh emphasized that students and Punjabis have previously united to oppose the central government’s attempts to undermine Punjab’s presence at the university. He stated that they have fought tirelessly to protect the Senate from these ongoing efforts.
With the Senate elections scheduled for September, Singh highlighted the importance of these elections in preserving Punjab’s academic, linguistic, and cultural identity. He urged everyone to actively participate, noting that all graduates (who have completed five years) and postgraduates are eligible to vote. Protecting Punjab’s identity, language, and culture at Punjab University is a collective responsibility, he asserted.
It is important to note that the Senate elections at Punjab University (Chandigarh) determine the university’s highest decision-making body. The Senate comprises a total of 91 members, many of whom are elected. These elections play a crucial role in shaping the university’s policies, budget, curriculum, appointments, and administrative matters.
Representatives from various categories are elected to the Senate, including registered graduates (voter alumni), teachers (professors, associate/assistant professors), college principals, and non-teaching staff. Political parties, student organizations, and local influential figures show significant interest in these elections.
The 2026 Senate elections have garnered considerable attention. The central government previously attempted to reduce the size of the Senate and alter its structure, leading to prolonged protests by students. Demonstrations were organized under the banner of the ‘Punjab University Bachao Morcha.’ Following substantial opposition, the Vice President (Chancellor of the University) approved the election schedule.
