London, July 1: In an exciting match at Wimbledon 2026, seventh-seeded Coco Gauff of the United States defeated Solana Sierra 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 in the second round of the women’s singles on Wednesday. Gauff secured her victory by winning six consecutive points in the final set tiebreak, overcoming a tough challenge from Sierra. The match lasted 2 hours and 8 minutes, earning Gauff a spot in the third round at the All England Club.
Argentinian player Sierra put up a strong fight on Court No. 1, nearly pulling off an upset against the American star. The 22-year-old Gauff managed to rally back and claim the match.
This season, Sierra has faced Gauff twice, each time increasing the level of difficulty for the American player. As she gained experience against the two-time Grand Slam singles champion, Sierra’s performance improved, evident in the close scoreline.
In their first encounter at the United Cup in January, Sierra won only two games. However, she gave Gauff a tough match at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, where she led 3-0 in the final set but ultimately lost six of the last seven games.
Wednesday’s match was even tighter. Despite trailing 5-3 in the final set and 7-4 in the decisive tiebreak, Gauff showcased her resilience by winning six consecutive points for a thrilling victory.
Following a tough loss to Anastasia Potapova at Roland Garros last month, Gauff’s impressive performance in the final set continues to highlight her strong record on big stages. Her career record in Grand Slam three-set matches now stands at 22-7.
Earlier, world number one Aryna Sabalenka secured her place in the third round of Wimbledon after a challenging match against American player McCartney Kessler. Sabalenka rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the second set, saving four set points to win 6-1, 7-6(9).
Sabalenka’s next match will be against former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, who delivered a stunning performance by defeating Croatia’s Antonia Ružič in just 66 minutes with a score of 6-2, 6-0.
