Kathmandu, August 27: The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal’s Bhotekoshi River has risen to 95 as of Wednesday evening. The Prime Minister’s Office reported that this disaster has caused significant loss of life and damage to infrastructure across the country.
By 7 PM, authorities had recovered 95 bodies from the affected areas. However, the identification process for the deceased is still ongoing.
This catastrophic flood, originating from the Tibetan region of China, wreaked havoc in Nepal as it surged down the Bhotekoshi River.
According to the Nepal government, 44 soldiers from the Nepal Army, 28 police personnel, and 13 armed police officers deployed in the disaster-stricken areas are still unaccounted for and have not been contacted.
Additionally, 391 foreign tourists and 93 Nepali tourists are reported missing.
The government also indicated that 60 employees working at various hydropower projects in the affected regions are out of contact. Some staff members from the Rasuwagadhi customs and immigration offices are also among the missing.
The destructive flood, which struck on Wednesday morning, has severely damaged transportation infrastructure. So far, 19 motorable bridges and approximately 40 kilometers of paved roads have been reported damaged.
Authorities are still assessing the full extent of the loss of life and property.
The Prime Minister’s Office stated that immediately after the floods, the government activated security agencies and relevant departments for search, rescue, and relief operations.
Around 9 AM, the administration issued a high alert for riverside areas, urging residents to stay in safe locations and avoid going near the river.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Nepal-China border area, particularly the Rasuwa district, has been the hardest hit by this disaster. Many government offices, security establishments, hydropower projects, and other critical infrastructure have suffered severe damage.
