Sinner Breaks Italian Grand Slam Record by Defeating Borges at Wimbledon

London, July 1: Current champion Jannik Sinner has advanced to the third round of Wimbledon. On Wednesday, he defeated Portugal’s Nuno Borges with a score of 7-6(4), 7-6(2), 6-4 on Centre Court. Sinner will now face American player Jensen Brooksby. This victory marks Sinner’s 95th Grand Slam main draw win, surpassing Nicola Pietrangeli to become the Italian player with the most Grand Slam match victories.

After a grueling five-set battle against Miomir Kecmanovic in his first match, the world number one showcased an impressive performance on Wednesday. He elevated his game at crucial moments, breaking Borges’s serve when he was serving for the second set at 5-4. The match concluded in 2 hours and 32 minutes.

The 24-year-old Sinner is also aiming to make history at the All England Club, with the goal of becoming only the 10th man to defend the Wimbledon title in the Open Era. His rival, Carlos Alcaraz, achieved this feat two years ago.

In contrast to his challenging opening match, Sinner appeared more comfortable against the world number 48. He finished the match with 47 winners and 30 unforced errors. Although he struggled with his serve in the third set, giving Borges a brief opportunity to break, Sinner quickly regained control by breaking twice at the start of the set.

After the victory, Sinner mentioned that he is still searching for his rhythm on grass courts, having opted not to play any warm-up tournaments before Wimbledon. He stated, “Especially in the first round, I felt the lack of matches. There were moments today as well. I need to get back into that rhythm. If we look at the scoreboard, the match was very close, so such matches, especially different sets, help me a lot.”

The reigning champion believes he can improve as the tournament progresses. He added, “Of course, our goal is to get a little better. Tomorrow is a day off. I didn’t do much today because my first match was five sets and very long, so I’m happy with today.”
