Patna, August 17: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar visited Nalanda, Bihar, where he toured the ruins of the ancient Nalanda University and engaged with Booth Level Officers (BLOs).
Upon arrival at this UNESCO World Heritage site, Kumar was welcomed by district administration and archaeology department officials. He inspected the historic campus and gathered information about the ancient structures and relics present.
Speaking to reporters, CEC Kumar expressed pride in visiting such a historic location. He referred to the BLOs as the foundation of democracy, stating that communicating with them was a privilege. He discussed the pivotal role of BLOs in the electoral process and their efforts to ensure the accuracy of the voter list.
Kumar noted that political party booth-level agents also audit the voter list. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accuracy in the electoral process. Discussions with the BLOs included the verification of the voter list, the roles of political party agents, and audits conducted during the election process and counting.
Highlighting Nalanda’s historical significance, Kumar remarked that visiting this site evokes a sense of pride, as India’s culture and knowledge were renowned worldwide thousands of years ago. He found it challenging to articulate the pride felt when visiting a heritage site like Nalanda.
The Chief Election Commissioner further stated that Bihar initiated the country’s most successful initiative to purify the voter list. He referenced the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, noting that the voter turnout during these peaceful elections was the highest since independence.
Kumar claimed that the voter turnout in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections surpassed that of general elections in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Japan. He also saluted the voters of Bihar and those from Vaishali, often regarded as the birthplace of democracy.
