Lucknow, August 24: India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, visited his former school, Colvin Taluqdars’ College, on Monday, reminiscing about his student days. This time, he took on the role of a teacher.
He engaged directly with students from grades 11 and 12, imparting lessons on democracy, elections, voting rights, and the importance of being responsible citizens. Reflecting on his own school experiences, Kumar emphasized that the college provided him not just academic knowledge but also discipline, courage to face challenges, and the ability to embrace the right ideas.
Kumar highlighted that the school and college years are crucial for personal development, shaped significantly by good teachers, a supportive environment, and enriching experiences. He expressed gratitude for the lessons he learned at the institution, which have been invaluable throughout his life. During his interaction, he encouraged students to absorb the teachings from their teachers and the school environment.
The Chief Election Commissioner also discussed the role of youth in democracy. He stated that voting is not merely a right but a vital means of participating in the nation’s future. An informed electorate is the foundation of a strong democracy. He urged students to understand their voting rights and the responsibilities that accompany them.
Throughout the dialogue, students posed numerous questions about the electoral process, eligibility to vote, and fair elections. Upon arriving at Colvin Taluqdars’ College, Kumar appeared emotional as he recalled his past. He shared that his deep connection with Lucknow began with his early education here before he pursued higher studies. Returning to his school after so many years was a special experience for him. He advised students that life presents various phases, and the current phase they are experiencing is crucial for shaping their personalities and futures.
Kumar encouraged students to learn as much as possible from their teachers, the school environment, and the experiences offered. He remarked, “The lessons this college taught me have been instrumental in my life. This time in school is when many valuable lessons are imparted. Good teachers and a nurturing environment teach us a lot. One must be receptive to those ideas and lessons.”
He described his interaction with students as a pleasant experience, likening it to a dialogue between the past and the present. One era was his, while the other belongs to the current students. With assembly elections scheduled in Uttar Pradesh for 2027, the Chief Election Commissioner’s dialogue with these future voters is deemed significant.
