Balochistan, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic gas explosion in a coal mine in Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan has resulted in the deaths of four workers and injuries to five others. The incident occurred on Sunday in a mine located in the Harnai district, where gas accumulation led to the blast.
Rescue teams from the Pakistan Army quickly responded to the scene. They recovered the bodies of the four workers and safely evacuated the five injured miners, who were subsequently transported to the provincial capital, Quetta, for medical treatment.
This incident follows a similar tragedy in August, when three miners lost their lives in a coal mine in the Dukki district due to toxic methane gas inhalation. Among the deceased were two Afghan nationals and one Pakistani citizen.
According to officials and local media reports, the recent explosion was triggered by the accumulation of methane gas during mining operations. The toxic gas caused the miners to lose consciousness, prompting other workers to alert authorities. The Mines and Minerals Department then initiated a rescue operation.
Reports indicate that by the time rescue teams reached the site, all three miners had already succumbed to the gas exposure. The victims were later identified as two Afghans and one Pakistani.
Earlier in July, another methane gas explosion in a coal mine in the Sorange area claimed the lives of 34 workers. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported that the blast occurred after methane gas accumulated in the mine, leading to a significant collapse that trapped many workers under rubble.
At the time of the recent explosion, 41 miners were present in the mine, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in Pakistan’s coal mining industry, where gas leaks and mine collapses are alarmingly frequent.
