Auckland, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, the Chief of the Indian Navy, was warmly welcomed at the HMNZS Philomel naval base in Auckland on September 14. The reception featured a traditional Māori pōwhiri ceremony, which is regarded as a spiritual and cultural cornerstone for the Royal New Zealand Navy.
This heartfelt welcome symbolizes the mutual respect, friendship, and robust maritime relations between India and New Zealand. The Indian Navy shared on the social media platform X, stating, “Tradition spoke before words. During his official visit, Admiral Swaminathan also met with India’s High Commissioner to New Zealand, Muanpui Saiyavi, and Consul General Madan Mohan Sethi. The Indian High Commission in New Zealand noted on X that the Admiral’s visit comes at a time when bilateral relations and maritime cooperation between India and New Zealand are strengthening.
After successful meetings and events in Australia, Admiral Swaminathan arrived in Auckland with the primary aim of further enhancing naval ties between the two nations. This visit is seen as a continuation of the renewed enthusiasm following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to New Zealand in July.
According to the Ministry of Defence, during Modi’s visit, India and New Zealand elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership, agreeing to enhance cooperation in defense, maritime security, and various other sectors.
During this visit, Admiral Swaminathan will engage with senior officials from the Royal New Zealand Navy and New Zealand’s defense leadership. The discussions will focus on operational cooperation, information exchange, training, and professional exchanges between the two navies. He will also visit key naval operations and training centers in New Zealand and meet with Royal New Zealand Navy officers and military education trainees.
The Ministry emphasized that this visit holds particular significance in light of the recent Maritime Cooperation Arrangement, which provides a comprehensive framework for enhancing practical maritime cooperation between India and New Zealand.
