Chandigarh, May 18: In a significant initiative aimed at engaging and supporting senior citizens in the Tricity area, the Chandigarh Citizens Foundation (CCF) has launched ‘Project Seva.’ This unique program focuses on addressing the emotional, mental, social, and physical needs of the elderly, while also providing assistance during medical emergencies.
The project has been initiated on a pilot basis in Sector 27D of Chandigarh. The Resident Welfare Association (RWA), partner welfare committees, and local residents have been involved to ensure timely help for senior citizens when needed.
The primary focus of this initiative is on seniors aged 70 and above, particularly those living alone or with family. CCF aims to alleviate feelings of loneliness, enhance community engagement, and encourage participation in various daily activities. These activities include gardening, temple visits, walks in the park, and other social events.
Through these activities, the program seeks to improve the physical, mental, and emotional health of the elderly. This initiative aligns with CCF’s mission to create a neighborhood where no elderly person feels alone, and where respect, companionship, and care are integral to daily life.
As part of this initiative, RWA members and volunteers have met with around 30 senior citizens in Sector 27D to encourage their participation in community activities.
The CCF team, which includes several esteemed doctors, has assessed the needs of the elderly and conducted health check-ups. Arrangements have been made for neighborhood volunteers and family members to regularly visit seniors living alone to help reduce their loneliness.
CCF has also organized 24-hour “Activity Sessions,” featuring both indoor and outdoor activities. These programs allow seniors to connect, converse, and share light-hearted moments. Activities include singing devotional songs, discussing current topics, and engaging in recreational games like chess and puzzles.
During morning sessions and walks in the park, trained sports volunteers are encouraging seniors to participate in aerobics, yoga, singing, dancing, and fun games.
A notable aspect of ‘Project Seva’ is that all programs and activities are conducted under the CCF banner, without the involvement of any external agencies.
It is important to note that CCF was established a year ago with the goal of building a more sustainable and inclusive Chandigarh. The initiative was launched by former Army Chief General V. P. Malik, who serves as CCF’s president, along with members of the Governing Council, which includes retired bureaucrats, industrialists, artists, and advocates from various sectors of society.
