New Delhi, February 13: The central government has approved 10 road and 16 bridge projects in Assam to strengthen the state’s infrastructure. This initiative aims to enhance transportation facilities across the region.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced that ₹617.98 crores have been sanctioned for the road projects under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme. Additionally, ₹129.74 crores have been approved for the bridge projects under the CRIF Setu Bandhan scheme.
Gadkari stated on social media that these projects will improve regional connectivity in Assam, reduce travel time, and simplify transportation systems. He emphasized that robust roads and bridges are essential for national development, particularly in critical areas like the Northeast.
According to officials, the approved roads will focus on enhancing vital routes connecting districts, markets, and industrial areas. Under the Setu Bandhan scheme, old and weak bridges will be replaced with new ones, ensuring safe passage for people, especially in flood-prone and riverine areas.
The Assam government has welcomed these projects, stating they will boost trade, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and benefit agriculture, small businesses, and tourism. Improved road connectivity will also make access to health, education, and other essential services easier for remote villages.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has previously stated that infrastructure development is the cornerstone of Assam’s progress.
These projects fall under the ‘PM Gati Shakti’ National Master Plan, which aims to expedite and enhance coordination in development initiatives across various sectors.
In recent years, the central government has consistently increased investments in Assam’s roads, recognizing the state as the gateway to the Northeast and its significance in India’s ‘Act East’ policy.
The new projects are expected to lower transportation costs, ease the movement of goods, and accelerate the state’s social and economic development.
