Kolkata Police Suspend Officers Over Extortion Allegations

Kolkata, August 29: In a significant move, the Kolkata Police have suspended two officers and removed a civic volunteer following allegations of extortion involving commercial vehicles in the South 24 Parganas district.

The allegations surfaced after reports indicated that vehicles were being stopped in the Ghatakpukur Chowmatha area, where money was forcibly collected. An investigation revealed the involvement of a sergeant, a constable, and a civic volunteer.

On Saturday, a senior police official confirmed that, following an initial inquiry, the sergeant and constable were suspended, while the civic volunteer was relieved of duty. They are currently under suspension pending a departmental investigation.

According to police sources, the Bhangan traffic police guard initiated the investigation after receiving complaints. The inquiry focused on the roles of the police officers on duty in the area, specifically Sergeant Nurul Islam Mulla, Constable Shivanand Thakur, and Civic Volunteer Ali Hasan Mulla.

Police sources indicated that after confirming the initial allegations, departmental action was taken. Sergeant Nurul Islam Mulla and Constable Shivanand Thakur were suspended, while Civic Volunteer Ali Hasan Mulla was dismissed from service.

This case extends beyond mere administrative action. A departmental investigation has commenced against all three individuals. The inquiry will seek to uncover the nature of the allegations, the duration of such incidents, and whether others were involved.

Investigators are also looking into whether drivers were harassed for not paying. In addition to suspending the two police officers, the Kolkata Police stated that any irregularities or illegal extortion during duty hours would be dealt with strictly. Further action will be taken following the completion of the departmental investigation.
