Brussels, August 29: The catastrophic floods affecting several villages in Tibet and Nepal serve as a stark reminder that nature does not wait for political agendas.
A recent report indicates that Chinese authorities attempted to suppress news of the avalanche, but the roaring glaciers, earth tremors, and rushing floodwaters have revealed the disaster’s severity, which cannot be hidden through censorship.
Khedrub Thondup, the nephew of the Dalai Lama, wrote in the European Times, “When a large section of the glacier on Mount Langtang Lirung broke off and fell over two kilometers into the valley, the earth trembled. This massive avalanche released seismic energy equivalent to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, triggering sudden floods in villages along the Nepal-Tibet border. However, within Tibet, this tragedy remains limited to whispers.”
He further stated, “Beijing’s censorship system ensures that no official bulletin, local report, or public acknowledgment of this devastation emerges. This silence is not coincidental; it is a policy.”
According to Thondup, the Chinese Communist Party views Tibet not as a fragile ecosystem but as a platform to showcase ‘stability.’ Such disasters threaten that image. Acknowledging glacier breakages due to climate change could also expose vulnerabilities in China’s large-scale hydropower and infrastructure projects in the Himalayas.
The report highlights that the sudden floods reaching Nepal demonstrate that the risks of such disasters extend beyond borders. However, due to official silence, efforts are made to avoid potential ‘diplomatic discomfort.’ The voices of the Tibetan people are suppressed, local eyewitnesses lack a platform to speak, and information from border areas is quickly dismissed as ‘rumors.’
The European Times reports, “Entire valleys have been transformed by the swift floodwaters. Families in Nepal mourn the loss of loved ones, while on the other side of the border, Tibetans struggle to obtain information about their missing relatives or the status of their villages. In the absence of official information, there is no coordination of relief efforts, no warnings issued to lower regions, and no accountability established. Here, silence is not neutral; it is deadly.”
This is not the first time Beijing has been accused of suppressing news of a disaster in Tibet. Previous incidents involving earthquakes, landslides, and dam failures have also been downplayed or ignored by official channels.
The report states, “The glacier break near Langtang Lirung is part of a broader pattern. Disasters are viewed as threats to political legitimacy rather than emergencies demanding transparency. The hope is to control reality, but the rivers flowing from Tibet, which reach Nepal, India, and Bangladesh, cannot be censored. They carry the truth downstream.”
Additionally, the report emphasizes that the Himalayan region is warming faster than the global average. Incidents of glacier melting, instability, and breakage are on the rise, each bringing consequences felt at both geological and geopolitical levels.
