New Delhi, August 2: Renowned lyricist and poet Shakil Badayuni was born on August 3, 1916, in the Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh. This year marks his 110th birth anniversary. He contributed numerous unforgettable songs to Hindi cinema that continue to resonate with audiences today. Shakil passed away on August 20, 1970, in Mumbai.
Shakil Badayuni, originally named Shakil Ahmed, adopted the surname ‘Badayuni’ due to his roots in Badaun. After completing his early education, he attended Aligarh Muslim University. Following his studies, he began a government job in Delhi, where he also started participating in mushairas (poetry recitals). In 1940, he married Salma, and in 1944, he moved to Mumbai, leaving Delhi behind.
Upon arriving in the film capital, Shakil penned many memorable songs. His work extended beyond film music; he also wrote several bhajans. One of his most cherished bhajans from the film ‘Baiju Bawra,’ titled “Man Tadpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj,” remains deeply ingrained in people’s hearts. The collaboration between Shakil Badayuni and composer Naushad produced many iconic songs for Hindi cinema. He was honored with the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist and wrote songs for 89 films. Tragically, Shakil passed away at the young age of 53.
Among his finest works are hits like “Chaudhavi Ka Chand,” “Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya,” “Na Jao Saiyan Chhuda Ke Baiyan Kasam Tumhari,” “Husnwaale Tera Jawab Nahin,” and “Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki.” His songs garnered him immense popularity.
Shakil’s first collaboration with Naushad for the film ‘Dard’ was a massive success. Following this, Naushad enlisted Shakil to write songs for several films, including ‘Dard,’ ‘Deedar,’ ‘Baiju Bawra,’ ‘Mother India,’ ‘Mughal-e-Azam,’ ‘Ganga Jamuna,’ and ‘Mere Mehboob.’
