New Delhi, June 27: Maulana Sajid Rashidi, President of the All India Imam Association, has raised serious concerns regarding financial irregularities at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, demanding a fair investigation. He has also sparked a new debate on Muslim leadership in Uttar Pradesh politics, urging the Samajwadi Party to announce a Muslim candidate for Chief Minister.
Rashidi emphasized that any form of theft or financial misconduct related to religious sites is a matter of faith for millions and should undergo a transparent investigation. He questioned the impartiality of an inquiry conducted under the oversight of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) for a trust established by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The investigation agency must operate independently and transparently to avoid public skepticism.
He further claimed that the investigation should not only target lower-level individuals but also scrutinize the roles of influential figures involved. A comprehensive examination of all aspects is essential to uncover the truth.
Commenting on a case where a driver associated with the trust allegedly purchased properties worth millions, Rashidi stated that it is natural to investigate the income sources of anyone making such significant purchases. Financial transactions, property acquisitions, and funding sources must be independently examined to present a clear picture to the public. Given the faith of millions of devotees, the investigation should remain free from bias.
Regarding the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Rashidi announced a campaign demanding secular parties to declare a Muslim candidate for Chief Minister. He noted that despite a significant Muslim population in the state, no Muslim leader has had the opportunity to become Chief Minister. He urged the Samajwadi Party to nominate a Muslim face for the position if it genuinely wishes to represent the community.
During this discussion, he suggested the name of a senior party leader and former minister, who has been associated with the party for a long time, as a potential candidate. Such a move could garner substantial support from Muslim voters.
Rashidi also questioned the police’s measurement of the height and size of tazias during Muharram. He stated that the Muharram procession is rooted in mourning and grief, and the traditional displays have been part of the religious-cultural heritage for years. Given that the administration has already issued guidelines, the need for repeated measurements seems unnecessary. Some officials appear to be creating unwarranted controversies to attract media attention.
