Seoul, August 28: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sent messages of sympathy on Friday regarding the devastating floods in the Himalayan region. He addressed both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Nepalese President Ram Chandra Paudel.
According to reports from Yonhap News Agency, foreign media has indicated that over 500 people have died and more than 1,500 are missing in China and Nepal due to heavy flooding and landslides that occurred in the Himalayan area bordering China on Wednesday.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that in his message to Xi, Kim expressed “deep condolences” to the Chinese leader, his party, government, and the affected families. He also expressed hope that the situation would return to normal as soon as possible, allowing the impacted areas to regain peace and stability.
In a separate report, KCNA stated that Kim conveyed “sincere condolences and sympathy” to President Paudel, as well as to the Nepalese government and its people, in light of the fatalities and missing persons.
Meanwhile, on Friday, Nepalese authorities issued a new warning regarding the risk of further flooding. They reported a breach of a lake in the Tibetan region of China, which could lead to additional floods in Nepal.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) noted in a statement that water flow with debris and mud has increased again in the same area of the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa, where significant flooding occurred on August 26.
The notice urged all personnel involved in rescue and relief operations along the banks of the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, as well as those in high-risk areas, to exercise extreme caution and to move to safety at the first sign of danger.
Nepal Police also issued a warning, stating they received reports of a lake bursting in the Tibetan region. They urged the public and rescue workers to remain alert to the potential dangers.
