Meghalayas Anti-Drug Campaign Transforms into a Peoples Movement: Chief Minister Sangma

Shillong, June 27: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on Friday that the state’s Dream Mission (Drug Prevention, Eradication, and Action) has evolved from a government initiative into a grassroots movement. He emphasized that this mission is uniting communities, institutions, and organizations in a coordinated fight against substance abuse and illegal trafficking.

Sangma stated that this initiative is a key mission for the Meghalaya government, aimed at preventing drug abuse, strengthening rehabilitation, raising awareness, assisting recovery, and establishing coordination among government departments, law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, civil society organizations, and communities.

While addressing the state-level event for the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Shillong, Sangma highlighted that the campaign aims to replace the stigma associated with addiction with compassion and empathy, while also enhancing efforts to eliminate drug abuse and organized trafficking.

The Chief Minister noted that this day unites governments, communities, educators, and religious organizations in a shared mission to eradicate substance abuse, end illegal drug trafficking, and transform the stigma associated with addiction into compassion and empathy. He acknowledged that although many organizations and individuals have long been working against substance abuse, their efforts often lack coordination. The Dream Mission has brought all these stakeholders together on a common platform to ensure better collaboration and impact.

Sangma stressed that mere awareness is not enough and called for concrete action. He mentioned that the government is providing support to organizations and individuals working in prevention, rehabilitation, and awareness, and that public participation is crucial for the long-term success of this movement.

He concluded by stating that without active participation from the general public, the anti-drug campaign cannot succeed. The aim is not only to appreciate the efforts of stakeholders but also to listen to their suggestions and strengthen this collective mission.
