New Delhi, August 11: Amid ongoing tensions between the government and opposition in Parliament, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday of “exploiting students to promote his agenda.” The party stated that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is fully prepared to respond during a “detailed discussion” regarding the student protests.
The opposition has been demanding answers from Minister Shah concerning alleged police brutality against protesters during the “Parliament Chalo” march on July 20.
Following the suspension of proceedings in both houses of Parliament due to opposition uproar, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju spoke to reporters, stating, “We mentioned on Monday that the central government is ready for a detailed discussion on incidents related to student protests, and we have prepared our responses.”
Rijiju added outside Parliament, “The Home Minister is also fully prepared to answer during the discussion. We have assured that the government is ready for not just statements, but a complete discussion, even if it takes two days. We are committed to addressing every point raised, as there are many aspects to the protests, but unfortunately, Congress has walked away.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Union Minister Giriraj Singh criticized the opposition, saying, “The government and the Speaker have been stating for days that they are ready for discussion, but the opposition does not want that. They only want chaos. They do not seek answers. The opposition desires disorder, wants to sign petitions, and take money meant for the poor, showing no shame.”
Singh also targeted Congress over the protests in Jharkhand. Accusing Rahul Gandhi of adopting a “double standard,” he urged, “Withdraw support from the Jharkhand government led by JMM, remove Hemant Soren from the chief minister‘s position, or resign from the position of opposition leader in the Lok Sabha.”
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya alleged that the opposition, particularly Rahul Gandhi, is using students as pawns to further their agenda. He told reporters, “By obstructing Parliament and halting proceedings, they are engaging in destructive politics. Rahul Gandhi is doing the same in Jharkhand. Some issues are above politics, and the student issue is paramount. No party should politicize this.”
Referring to Rahul Gandhi, Surya remarked, “Stop politicizing at your convenience and stop using students for your political gains.”
