Kolkata, February 14: The Election Commission of India announced on Friday that all documents related to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal will be securely maintained for the next five years.
This directive was issued by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during a virtual meeting. The meeting included West Bengal’s Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal, officials from his office, district magistrates, district election officers, electoral registration officers, and assistant electoral registration officers.
An official present at the meeting reported that the Chief Election Commissioner issued a clear warning: if any foreign national’s name is found on the final voter list five years after the revision, action could be taken against the concerned election officials, including district election officers.
Sources indicated that if a responsibility is assigned to any Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, it could impact their annual confidential report, potentially affecting their career advancement.
During the meeting, the Chief Election Commissioner instructed district election officers to accept only the 13 documents specified by the Election Commission as valid identification during the hearing of claims and objections on the draft voter list.
He urged officials to exercise special caution when verifying documents. It was also revealed that in some instances, electoral registration officers and assistant officials had uploaded documents into the system that were neither listed nor valid. The commission expressed concern over this issue and instructed that such discrepancies should not occur in the future.
Gyanesh Kumar further warned that any violations related to this matter in the future would lead to strict disciplinary action against the concerned election officials. He directed the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to personally monitor these cases and ensure compliance with the regulations.
The extended deadline for hearing claims and objections on the draft voter list ends on Saturday. Following this, the verification process for the documents submitted during the hearings will continue until February 21. The final voter list is set to be published on February 28.
