Dhaka: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is currently under scrutiny not only for denying permission to the Bangladesh cricket team to participate in the T20 World Cup 2026 in India but also due to fresh corruption allegations. An investigation has been initiated against Mokhlesur Rahman, a BCB director and chairman of the audit committee, following claims of corrupt practices.
The BCB’s Integrity Unit has launched a formal inquiry into the allegations against Rahman. According to a report by ESPN, Rahman has resigned from his position amid the ongoing investigation.
The Integrity Unit of BCB is being led by Alex Marshall, former head of the ICC Integrity Unit. He is reviewing a comprehensive 900-page independent report prepared by a committee appointed by the board. This report details corruption allegations related to the previous Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) season. Rahman was elected as a director of BCB in the elections held on 6 October last year. Following the accusations, he stepped down from his role.
This month, Rahman became the second BCB director to face difficulties. Earlier, on 15 December, Bangladesh cricketers had boycotted BPL matches after M Najmul Islam made controversial comments about them on social media and during a press briefing. The investigation into Rahman is unfolding amid an ongoing dispute between Bangladesh and the ICC over the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Following violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, there was strong opposition in India to the inclusion of left-arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Acting on instructions from the BCCI, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) released Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad. Subsequently, the BCB refused to send its team to India for the T20 World Cup 2026, requesting the ICC to either shift their matches to Sri Lanka or change their group to play against Ireland. The ICC rejected these demands.
On advice from the Bangladesh government, the BCB has decided not to send the team to India for the tournament. The ICC is now considering including Scotland in place of Bangladesh in the World Cup.
