New Delhi, April 10: April 11 is not just a date; it marks the birthday of a remarkable musician from Himachal Pradesh who has brought folk music to the forefront, both nationally and internationally. We are talking about the renowned artist Somdatt Battu, born in the village of Jasur in Kangra district, who is also celebrated as Himachal’s pride.
Somdatt Battu was born on April 11, 1938. Growing up in a musically rich environment, his father was a singer, which greatly influenced him. From a young age, Battu began to grasp the nuances of folk music. His foundation in music was strengthened through experiences at village gatherings and religious events where folk melodies resonated.
As time passed, he ventured into classical music, receiving formal training from Shrikunj Lal Sharma of the Gwalior Gharana and Kundan Lal Sharma of the Patiala Gharana. He further refined his singing under the guidance of the legendary Ustad Amir Khan from the Indore Gharana. The fusion of these three musical traditions became the cornerstone of his unique style.
One of Battu’s distinguishing features is his belief that folk music and classical music complement each other. This perspective is evident in his performances, which blend the seriousness of classical ragas with the simplicity and warmth of Himachali folk tunes. He has dedicated himself to preserving and promoting various folk music styles from Himachal Pradesh, ensuring they reach the younger generation.
Battu has been a prominent artist on All India Radio and Doordarshan, with his programs being widely appreciated across the country. He has created numerous shows based on Himachali folk tunes, connecting people to their roots. Not only in India but also abroad, he has represented Himachal at prestigious music festivals, enhancing the image of Indian folk music.
Beyond being a singer, Somdatt Battu is also an accomplished writer and researcher. He has conducted extensive studies on folk music and documented its traditions. His contributions have earned him several prestigious awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2018, the Sangeet Kala Ratna in 1975, the Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar Award in 2001, the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, and the Sangeet Martand Award in 2014. The highest honor came in 2024 when he was awarded the Padma Shri, recognizing his lifelong dedication to music on a national level.
