Remembering Morarji Desai: A Visionary Leader and Nationalist

New Delhi, April 10: On the anniversary of former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, several prominent leaders paid tribute to his contributions on Friday.

Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan honored Desai with floral tributes at the Vice President’s residence, reflecting on his life and dedication to the nation.

Central Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also paid his respects via a post on the social media platform X. He described Morarji Desai as a rich nationalist personality, a freedom fighter, and a visionary leader. His powerful and inspiring thoughts continue to motivate the youth towards national progress and societal development.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma remembered Desai for his simplicity, discipline, and unwavering commitment to democratic values, which will always serve as an inspiration.

Morarji Desai was born on February 29, 1896, and passed away on April 10, 1995. He served as India’s fourth Prime Minister and was recognized as a prominent freedom fighter.

Desai was the first non-Congress Prime Minister of India, leading the Janata Party government from 1977 to 1979, marking the first non-Congress administration in independent India.

In recognition of his contributions, the Government of India awarded him the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honor, in 1991.

His tenure was significant in terms of economic policies, notably implementing demonetization on January 16, 1978. This marked the first demonetization in independent India and the second in the country’s history, withdrawing high-value notes of 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 rupees from circulation. The primary aim was to curb black money and illegal activities.
