Nitish Kumar Takes Oath as Rajya Sabha Member, Signaling a Historic Shift in Bihar Politics

New Delhi, April 10: Nitish Kumar, who has served as the Chief Minister of Bihar for nearly two decades, took his oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha on Friday afternoon. The oath was administered by Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan.

Present at the ceremony were key political figures, including Leader of the House and Union Minister J.P. Nadda, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, and leaders from JDU and BJP. Kumar’s swearing-in marks the beginning of a significant political transition in Bihar. Notably, he resigned from the Bihar Legislative Council on March 30 after being elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Kumar was elected to the upper house of Parliament from Bihar last month. He has been a central figure in Bihar’s politics for almost two decades and is also the head of the Janata Dal (United). With this oath-taking, he embarks on a new political journey starting April 10. Kumar took the oath in Hindi at 12:15 PM, marking his active participation in national politics.

It is anticipated that Kumar may soon resign from his position as Chief Minister of Bihar. Following his resignation, a new government will be formed in the state. The resignation of the Chief Minister will also dissolve the current cabinet, leading to the selection of a new Chief Minister and the swearing-in of the cabinet.

Political analysts suggest that the new Chief Minister of Bihar could be from the BJP, with a possibility of a Deputy Chief Minister from JDU. Kumar arrived in Delhi on Thursday, where he was welcomed by several senior leaders, including JDU’s National Executive President Sanjay Jha.

This visit to Delhi is crucial for Kumar. It signifies the end of his previous role and the start of a new chapter. He first became an MLA in 1985 and has served as a Member of Parliament six times, holding the Chief Minister’s position multiple times. He has been a part of all four houses of parliamentary democracy: Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Vidhan Sabha, and Vidhan Parishad.

It is worth noting that several senior leaders are currently members of the Rajya Sabha, including J.P. Nadda, Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, and Sharad Pawar. On Monday, 19 individuals, including Sharad Pawar, took their oaths as Rajya Sabha members. This event took place in the Rajya Sabha chamber, where Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan administered the oaths.
