Guwahati, June 22: Badaruddin Ajmal, the leader of the AIUDF, accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of creating an atmosphere of fear among the state’s Muslim community due to his political actions and public statements.
Ajmal, who recently won the Binakandi assembly seat in the state elections, spoke to reporters on Monday. He claimed that Sarma’s divisive rhetoric has intensified fear among Muslims in Assam.
He stated, “Himanta Biswa Sarma is number one when it comes to making hateful statements. His politics and remarks have left Assam’s Muslims living in fear.”
Ajmal emphasized that the Muslim community is committed to social harmony and development in Assam.
Referring to educational programs run by his charitable organization, he noted that students from all communities attend institutions under the Ajmal Foundation.
He said, “In Ajmal Foundation institutions, not only Muslim students but also Hindu boys and girls study. We have always worked for education and social development without discrimination.”
Ajmal also commented on the upcoming census, urging Muslims in Assam to identify their mother tongue as ‘Assamese.’
According to him, this step would strengthen the relationship between the Muslim community and Assamese society.
He added, “During this census, Muslims should write Assamese as their language. This will reflect our connection to Assamese culture and society.”
Ajmal shared his views on leadership within the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), suggesting that senior Congress leader and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain should replace the current president, Gaurav Gogoi.
He argued that Hussain’s extensive political experience and grassroots connections could bolster the Congress organization in Assam ahead of future elections.
