London, July 30: British MPs have expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK). Reports indicate that over 40 civilians have been killed due to brutal actions by Pakistani security forces, with dozens more seriously injured.
Liam Byrne, a Labour Party MP, described reports of security forces firing on peaceful protesters as “worrying.” He condemned the ban on communication facilities in the occupied region and termed the human rights violations as “completely unacceptable.”
Byrne stated, “The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir has put forth two demands. First, we urge immediate discussions with the Pakistani High Commission in London to halt these actions. Second, we want to meet with our Foreign Office ministers to ensure they are firmly addressing this issue with the Pakistani government. It is crucial that the promises made regarding UN resolutions from years ago are honored. However, stopping the violence immediately is our top priority.”
He emphasized the need for urgent de-escalation, stating, “We must take measured steps at this time. Most importantly, the human rights of Kashmiris must be respected.”
Another British MP, Adnan Hussain, labeled the killings of civilians in POK as a “tragedy” and called for a “full, independent, and transparent” investigation into any excessive or unlawful use of force by Pakistani authorities.
Hussain urged all parties to exercise restraint, protect civilian lives, and engage in peaceful dialogue. “A lasting solution is only possible through calm, constructive discussions, not through violence or escalating tensions. My sympathies are with all victims, especially those voters whose families and loved ones are in the region,” he said.
Meanwhile, Agnes Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, noted that troubling reports from Rawalakot in POK reflect a long-standing “unlawful” pattern of behavior by Pakistani authorities against protesters.
She called on Pakistani officials to lift communication restrictions following reports of lethal force against protesters amid the so-called assembly elections in POK. Callamard also urged authorities to allow media and independent observers into the region.
She stated on the social media platform X, “There must be an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the use of force against protesters. Without lifting the restrictions on internet and mobile services, an accurate assessment of the situation on the ground cannot be made.”
