Assam Politician Accuses Congress MP of Asset Inflation Amid Political Tensions

Guwahati, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Akhil Gogoi, the head of the Raijor Dal and legislator from Sivasagar, has leveled serious allegations against Congress MP Rakibul Hussain. He claims that Hussain’s declared assets have dramatically increased between 2016 and 2024. Gogoi attributes this rise to the governance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam, raising questions about the sources of this wealth.

According to Gogoi, Hussain’s declared assets were valued at ₹4.38 crore in his 2016 election affidavit. By 2024, this figure reportedly soared to ₹25.29 crore. Over this eight-year span, the increase amounts to ₹20.91 crore, representing a staggering growth of approximately 477%.

Gogoi highlighted this issue, urging the public to consider the “untold story” behind the significant increase in Hussain’s wealth during Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s administration. Hussain, a prominent Congress leader in Assam, was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Dhubri constituency in the 2024 general elections.

This accusation comes amidst escalating political rifts between Raijor Dal and Congress in Assam. Both parties had initially formed an opposition alliance to counter the BJP but have since experienced a breakdown in relations, leading Congress to sever ties with Raijor Dal.

As the political landscape in the state prepares for upcoming contests, Gogoi’s recent attack on a senior Congress leader could intensify the conflict between the former allies. The figures cited by Gogoi are drawn from Hussain’s election affidavits, which candidates submit to disclose their assets. However, these affidavits do not inherently reveal any discrepancies or illegal sources of income.

To ascertain the reasons behind the reported asset increase, a thorough investigation into Hussain’s financial and property records would be necessary. As of now, there has been no immediate response from Hussain regarding these allegations.

Gogoi has frequently criticized the Congress leadership in Assam over various political and organizational issues, especially following the dissolution of their alliance.
