Manipur CM Condemns Grenade Attack on Congress Leader’s Home

Imphal, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, expressed strong condemnation on Friday regarding a grenade attack at the residence of Congress Legislative Party leader K. Meghachandra in Thoubal district. He stated that violence against elected representatives has no place in democracy and will not be tolerated.

The explosion occurred on Thursday evening near the gate of Meghachandra’s home in the Yairipok Vishnu Naha area of the Wangkhem constituency. In a post on the social media platform X, Singh wrote, “I strongly condemn the grenade attack on K. Meghachandra Singh’s home, which took place yesterday evening in Thoubal.” He emphasized that such acts of violence against elected officials are unacceptable, directing police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.

Preliminary reports suggest the explosion was caused by an explosive device thrown by an unidentified assailant. As of now, the attacker’s identity and motive remain unknown. Police promptly visited the site and initiated a search operation.

In response to the grenade attack, a protest was held on Friday organized by the All Yairipok Apunba Ima Lup (AYAIL). Demonstrators condemned the use of explosives in residential areas and expressed concerns for public safety.

Earlier, on August 28, Chief Minister Singh had visited the home of former minister and current BJP MLA Sapam Ranjan Singh in the Imphal West district, which had also been targeted by a bomb blast. Singh condemned that incident on social media, stating, “I strongly denounce such senseless and barbaric attacks on public representatives. This act of violence is an assault on our democracy, and the culprits will be held accountable.”

According to the MLA, the August 28 incident occurred while he was at home. The bomb detonated at the back of the house, creating a small crater and causing minor damage to the compound walls. Police have registered a case and commenced an investigation into that incident as well.
