Guwahati, June 29: Amidst severe flooding in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured the state of all possible assistance from the central government. Over 22,000 people across several districts have been affected by the floods.
In a social media update, CM Sarma shared that Home Minister Shah contacted him to inquire about the flood situation, particularly in the severely impacted Dhemaji district.
Sarma expressed gratitude to Amit Shah for reaching out regarding the flood conditions in Dhemaji. He informed Shah about the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts, and the Home Minister assured him of full support and cooperation from the Indian government to tackle the crisis.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, continuous rainfall has affected 22,124 individuals across six districts: Dhemaji, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Lakhimpur, and Kokrajhar.
Dhemaji remains the worst-hit district, with 15,483 residents suffering due to extensive flooding caused by persistent rains.
The floodwaters have inundated 96 villages and damaged approximately 1,690 hectares of agricultural land, impacting crops and the livelihoods of thousands of farmers. The authority also reported that 48,199 livestock have been affected during this flooding event.
The flood bulletin further indicated that the Disang River in Sivasagar district is flowing above the danger mark at Nanglamuraghat, raising concerns of additional flooding in low-lying areas if heavy rains continue.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall and erosion have partially collapsed a railway bridge over the Simen River in Dhemaji district, disrupting rail connectivity in the region.
The Northeast Frontier Railway has halted train services between Archipathar and Simen Chapari stations due to the severe flooding, which has resulted from over 110 mm of rainfall, washing away significant portions of land supporting one of the bridge’s pillars.
Officials reported that relief and rehabilitation operations are ongoing in the affected districts, while the administration remains on alert due to forecasts of continued rainfall.
