Tehran, June 30: Iran has confirmed that there will be no meeting between Iranian and American officials in Doha regarding the memorandum of understanding. Both Qatar and Iran have made it clear that discussions will not involve direct talks between Tehran and Washington. Ismail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, stated during a press briefing that there are no plans for any level of meeting with US officials.
He mentioned, “It is possible that discussions will take place on Wednesday in Doha with Qatari officials regarding the implementation of the memorandum of understanding (MOU). This includes provisions related to the release of Iran’s frozen financial assets in Qatar.”
Baghaei reiterated, “I want to clarify again that no meetings with the American side are scheduled for the coming days.”
Previously, the Qatari Foreign Ministry announced that Iran’s $6 billion in frozen funds have not yet been transferred to Tehran.
Additionally, Baghaei reaffirmed Iran’s stance on Lebanon, stating, “It is crucial for the US to fulfill its commitment to end the war on all fronts, especially in Lebanon, in accordance with the first provisions of the memorandum.”
The Iranian spokesperson emphasized, “The US must adhere to its commitments and, if necessary, compel the Zionist regime (Israel) to uphold its promises as well.” He added, “The assessment of America’s commitment will be based on the text of the memorandum.”
When questioned about the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei stated that they do not require foreign assistance to remove mines from the strait. In discussions with journalists, he noted that any external interference would not be “benevolent” and could complicate the situation further.
He explained that the issue of removing mines in the Strait of Hormuz is already part of the memorandum, thus requiring no intervention from outside parties.
Amid these developments, Luigi Di Maio, the European Union’s special representative for the Gulf region, met with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani in Doha.
According to the Qatari Foreign Ministry, both leaders reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ongoing diplomatic efforts to promote security and stability in the Gulf region following the signing of the memorandum between the US and Iran.
