India’s Role in Zanzibar Development Praised by Tanzania’s President Mwinyi

Dodoma, July 1: Tanzania’s President Hussein Ali Mwinyi recently met with India’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Bishwadeep Day. The meeting took place at the State House in Zanzibar, where President Mwinyi commended India’s contributions to the region’s development, particularly in investment, skill training, and information and communication technology (ICT). He also appreciated the technical and educational collaboration facilitated by IIT Madras in Zanzibar.

During the meeting, High Commissioner Day extended an official invitation from India’s Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan for President Mwinyi to visit India. This trip is proposed for July and will include a visit to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.

High Commissioner Day also participated in an orientation program for students from Zanzibar who received ICCR scholarships for the 2026-27 academic session. This event was organized by the Indian Consulate, where Day shared insights about the relationship between India and Tanzania, as well as the educational and cultural cooperation between the two nations. He emphasized the importance of making the most of their time in India and learning from their experiences, addressing students’ questions and concerns.

Last week, High Commissioner Day met with members of Tanzania’s Parliamentary Friendship Group in Dodoma. The meeting included the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mussa Ajan Zungu, and several MPs, such as Anton Albert Mwantoa and Arif Suleiman Premji, among others. Day provided the members with information regarding the relations and cooperation between India and Tanzania.
