Guwahati, May 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the appeal to refrain from cow sacrifice during Eid, made by several Eidgah committees and members of the Muslim community. The Chief Minister stated that this initiative would strengthen cultural harmony and social unity in Assam.
On social media platform X, the Chief Minister noted that many Eidgah committees in Assam had already urged people to avoid cow sacrifice, and now, members of the Muslim community are actively supporting this appeal in various locations.
He highlighted the positive messages regarding cow protection coming from districts such as Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Hojai, and Kamrup, asserting that these efforts would further enhance Assam’s cultural unity. Sarma expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all committees and aware citizens for their support.
Previously, the Chief Minister shared information about the appeal from the Dhubri Town Eidgah Committee on social media. According to him, the committee urged people to respect the sentiments of the Hindu community and abide by the law by avoiding cow sacrifice.
He wrote, “Following the appeals from various committees, the Dhubri Town Eidgah Committee has also requested people to honor the feelings of Hindus and to refrain from cow sacrifice.”
The Chief Minister also called upon all Eid committees in Assam to join in celebrating a ‘cow sacrifice-free’ Eid this year.
This issue has sparked significant political and social discussions in Assam. The ruling BJP government has consistently emphasized maintaining communal harmony and strictly enforcing animal protection laws.
Under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, strict regulations are in place governing the slaughter, sale, and transportation of animals.
