New Delhi, August 26: India’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs (West), Sibi George, represented the country at the National Day celebrations of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. The event also featured Alberto Antonio Guani Amarilla, Uruguay’s ambassador to India. Following the ceremony, Ambassador Amarilla shared important updates regarding the diplomatic relations between the two nations.
He announced that India is set to open an embassy in Uruguay. This development comes as both countries celebrate 75 years of diplomatic ties, marking a pivotal moment in their relationship. “We have high hopes for our bilateral relations, especially as we commemorate this significant milestone,” Amarilla stated. He expressed optimism about the upcoming inauguration ceremony, which is expected to be attended by India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar.
Amarilla also highlighted the warm relationship between President Yamandú Orsi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They met last year in Brazil, and there are hopes for reciprocal visits between the leaders in the near future.
“Prime Minister Modi has made significant contributions, strongly supporting developing nations and taking steps to enhance ties between South America and India,” Amarilla noted. He emphasized the importance of Modi’s visits to Brazil and Argentina, expressing confidence that such connections will continue to grow. Currently, trade between India and South America stands at approximately $50 billion, with expectations to reach nearly $100 billion by 2030. “I believe this is just the beginning,” he remarked.
Regarding Modi’s global leadership image, Amarilla stated, “His image is very positive. He promotes the idea of the world as one family and has maintained a strong commitment to peace while addressing global challenges. He has already established himself as a global leader, inspiring hope for a better future worldwide.”
On the rising military tensions between the U.S. and Iran, he remarked, “Like India, Uruguay values peace. We do not support conflicts between nations. We believe differences should be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means, and we hope these tensions will soon subside.”
He further added, “There is no doubt that oil remains a crucial energy resource. However, we also believe it is essential to invest in and transition towards renewable energy sources. This shift can help reduce dependence on resources that often lead to conflict and contribute to a more sustainable and peaceful future.”
