New Delhi, June 22: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed on Monday that the eastern and northeastern regions of India will play a decisive role in the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha elections. He stated that the BJP is poised to win a record number of seats from these areas.
Speaking at a media summit held in the capital, Sarma emphasized that the growing political influence of the BJP in eastern and northeastern India will significantly contribute to the party’s prospects in the next general elections.
He mentioned that these regions will provide a decisive number of seats in the 2029 elections, asserting that the BJP will secure a record number of victories, making this part of India crucial for the party’s success.
The Chief Minister noted that the eastern and northeastern states are rapidly coming together politically and economically, creating a new corridor for development and progress in the country.
Sarma remarked that the entire eastern and northeastern region is uniting. This emerging unity will have a profound impact on India’s future, both politically and economically.
The northeastern states have 25 Lok Sabha seats, while eastern India, which includes West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand, contributes approximately 117 members to the Lok Sabha.
Together, these regions account for about 142 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha, making them a critical battleground for national parties in elections.
Over the past decade, the BJP has steadily increased its influence in the northeastern states, where it is currently part of the ruling coalition in most areas.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA secured a majority in the northeast, while the BJP maintained its dominance in Assam.
The eastern and northeastern regions are considered vital for the BJP’s long-term electoral strategy as the party aims to strengthen its support base ahead of the 2029 parliamentary elections.
