Guwahati, April 10: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, accusing it of dragging popular singer Jubin Nautiyal into electoral politics through “desperate and low-level tactics.”
Speaking to reporters after voting, Sarma alleged that Congress engaged in “very cheap acts” by using Nautiyal’s image at polling booths to influence voters. He claimed such actions reflect the party’s dwindling grassroots support and a lack of confidence among its leaders.
The Chief Minister further noted that several leaders who recently joined Congress have limited their activities primarily to areas associated with Nautiyal, raising questions about their broader political reach.
Sarma warned that politicizing a cultural figure like Nautiyal could backfire on Congress, describing it as the party’s “biggest curse” in the current elections. He emphasized that the people of Assam would respond strongly to such actions, reiterating his belief that the BJP-led coalition would secure a decisive mandate.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister expressed satisfaction over the high voter turnout in the ongoing assembly elections, stating that the enthusiasm shown by voters, especially among Hindu and indigenous communities, demonstrates their strong commitment to the democratic process.
Sarma noted a clear increase in participation from local and indigenous voters this time, calling it a positive sign for democracy. He stated that such active participation strengthens the electoral system and reflects public trust in governance.
Commenting on the overall rise in voter turnout, Sarma described it as an encouraging sign, indicating that people are more aware and eager to exercise their democratic rights. He pointed out that peaceful voting and enthusiastic responses from voters signify a vibrant democratic culture in the state.
The Chief Minister also expressed confidence in the prospects of the BJP-led coalition, reiterating his earlier claim that the alliance would secure over 90 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly. He stated that feedback from voters across constituencies indicates a clear mandate in favor of the ruling coalition.
Sarma concluded by stating that increased voter participation will ultimately benefit the democratic framework and ensure a stronger, more representative government. He asserted that the final results will reflect the aspirations of the people, as Assam has witnessed one of its highest participation elections in recent years. According to the Election Commission of India, Assam recorded an unprecedented voter turnout of 85.38% in Thursday’s assembly elections, showcasing tremendous public engagement across the state.
