Guwahati, February 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made several sharp political remarks on Tuesday, predicting significant changes in the opposition landscape ahead of the 2031 assembly elections. He stated that Congress will gradually lose its relevance in the state.

Sarma indicated that by 2031, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would primarily contest elections against the Raijor Dal rather than Congress, signaling a shift in Assam’s political dynamics.

He claimed that Congress’s grassroots support, especially among Muslim leaders and workers, is likely to shift towards regional parties. Sarma remarked, “By next year, all hardworking Muslim leaders from Congress will join Raijor Dal,” adding that his main political challenge in the upcoming election cycle will be Raijor Dal instead of Congress.

According to him, Congress’s organizational strength is weakening at the grassroots level, creating space for alternative political forces.

Referring to Raijor Dal President Akhil Gogoi, the Chief Minister noted that future political equations will depend on whether Gogoi chooses to remain independent or ally with Congress.

Sarma stated, “If Akhil Gogoi aligns with Congress, it will create a different scenario. However, if he keeps Raijor Dal independent, the BJP will have to contest against them.”

He further suggested that if Gogoi presents himself as consistent, serious, and politically mature, he could unify Muslim votes and emerge as a significant force, comparing him to AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi.

The Chief Minister also discussed leaders eager to join the BJP, stating that many are willing to switch parties if assured of election tickets.

He emphasized, “We are not interested in those who come only for tickets. Still, many will join before the elections.”

Targeting Congress MP Rakibul Hussain directly, Sarma remarked that leaders with political legacies often fail to grasp grassroots realities.

He compared them to self-made grassroots leaders whom he respects, even if they do not join the BJP.

Sarma further noted that the departure of senior Congress leaders like Bhupen Kumar Bora has a profound ideological and psychological impact within the party, particularly among Hindu leaders and student wing members, accelerating Congress’s organizational decline in Assam.
