Guwahati, June 18: Assam Assembly Speaker Ranjit Kumar Das has urged farmers to adopt multi-crop farming to enhance agricultural productivity. He emphasized the importance of maximizing government support schemes to contribute to India’s goal of self-reliance.
Speaking to reporters, Das highlighted the crucial role of agriculture in achieving national self-sufficiency and strengthening India‘s position as a global economic power. He stressed that farmers, entrepreneurs, educators, and all sectors of society must work together to improve productivity, quality, and standards in their respective fields.
According to Das, true self-reliance can only be achieved when every sector operates at its full potential. Farmers play a significant role in this by increasing both the quantity and quality of agricultural production.
Das shed light on various government initiatives aimed at farmer welfare, stating that significant steps have been taken to ensure better returns on agricultural produce and reduce dependence on middlemen. He mentioned that the support system is being strengthened to help farmers purchase seeds, fertilizers, and other essential materials without relying on moneylenders.
The Speaker also referred to crop insurance schemes, which provide financial security to farmers against losses from natural disasters and adverse weather conditions. He noted that these measures aim to offer economic security to farmers and encourage them to invest more in agriculture.
Das specifically emphasized the need to increase mustard cultivation and reduce dependence on imported edible oils. He pointed out that fluctuations in international markets highlight the importance of boosting domestic production of crops like mustard.
Describing the current period as ideal for mustard farming, he urged farmers to adopt double and triple cropping methods wherever possible. He also encouraged farmers to take advantage of government assistance for tractors, power tillers, harvesters, and other agricultural machinery.
